Why Pokemon Pokopia stars Ditto, explained by its director
Shigeru Ohmori says Ditto suits a building game because it can turn into anything. Game Freak also showed rare early test footage.

Game Freak has published a video interview with Pokemon Pokopia director Shigeru Ohmori that does two unusual things at once: it explains a design decision that puzzled people at announcement, and it shows early prototype footage of a Pokemon game — something the studio almost never does.
The decision in question is Ditto. When Pokopia was revealed with Ditto as its protagonist, the reaction was mostly confusion. Ditto is a fan favourite in a joke-adjacent way, not a franchise mascot; it is not Pikachu, Eevee or a regional starter. Per Ohmori's comments reported by Nintendo Everything, that was closer to the point than an obstacle.
Ditto is a mechanic, not a mascot
The logic holds up once you look at what the game asks the player to do. Pokopia is a build-and-decorate life sim. Its player character needs to be able to become other things, take other shapes, and stand in for whatever the current task requires.
Ditto is the only Pokemon in the National Dex whose entire identity is transformation. Casting it as the protagonist makes the central verb of the genre — become the tool you need — a piece of established lore rather than an abstraction. Choosing Pikachu would have been safer and would have required inventing a reason for it to work.
The prototype footage is the rarer artefact
Game Freak showing early development footage is close to unprecedented. Nintendo Life's report notes Ohmori describes the game's development while the prototype plays — the "first evolution" of what shipped.
Prototype reveals are a confidence signal. Studios release them when the finished product is doing well enough that the gap between rough draft and release reads as craft rather than as a warning. Coming days after the Bubbly Basin add-on and the free 2.0 update landed to positive reviews, the timing is not accidental.
What it says about Game Freak right now
Pokopia sits alongside Beast of Reincarnation as evidence that Game Freak is willing to ship things that are not mainline Pokemon RPGs, and to talk about how they were made. For a studio historically as closed as any in the industry, the interview is a small but real shift in posture.
