Pokemon Pokopia's first paid add-on gets good reviews
Bubbly Basin is the first part of the Pokopia season pass. A free update came with it and lets everyone swim underwater.

The first slice of the Pokemon Pokopia Expansion Pass is out, and the verdict so far is that Game Freak understood the assignment. Nintendo Life has rounded up the reviews and first impressions for Bubbly Basin, and Nintendo Everything's own write-up calls the Expansion Pass "off to a great start."
Bubbly Basin adds a brand-new area to explore and decorate, on top of the five regions already in the base game. It shipped alongside a free 2.0 update available to every owner, add-on or not.
The free update is doing a lot of the work
Eurogamer's rundown of the 2.0 patch notes is the more interesting document of the two releases. The headline change is that players can now venture below the waterline — underwater exploration, new Poke-pals to meet down there, and a batch of new systems to play with. Quality-of-life improvements ship in the same update.
That split matters. By putting the underwater layer in the free patch rather than behind the Expansion Pass, Game Freak keeps the whole player base on the same feature set and sells the add-on on content volume instead of mechanics. It is the same approach Nintendo has used to keep its long-tail life-sim audiences from fragmenting.
What Bubbly Basin actually adds
Reviewers highlight a few consistent points:
- A new region built specifically around the water and underwater mechanics introduced in 2.0
- More decorating surface area, which is the core loop most Pokopia players are actually here for
- Enough new Pokemon encounters to justify a return trip for players who had drifted off after the base game
The reservation that shows up in more than one review is length. This is part one of the Expansion Pass, and it is priced and paced accordingly — a substantial evening or two rather than a second campaign.
Context: Pokopia has had a good year
The add-on arrives at a moment when the game has quietly become one of the franchise's more interesting experiments. Game Freak recently released a video interview with director Shigeru Ohmori covering the game's development, including early prototype footage, and a separate piece explaining why Ditto was chosen as the protagonist — a decision that looked strange on announcement and reads as deliberate now.
Part two of the Expansion Pass has not been dated. Given that part one arrived with a substantial free update attached, the next drop is worth watching for the same pattern.
