If you play any Pokemon game on a phone or a console, next week is worth logging in for. Polygon reports that free add-on content is confirmed around the 2026 World Championships, and that Pokemon Champions, Pokemon UNITE, Pokemon GO and the card game apps are all marking the event in some way.

Add-on content means extra things added to a game you already own. Here it is free rather than paid.

Which games are involved

GameWhat it is
Pokemon ChampionsThe battle-focused game built for competitive play
Pokemon UNITEThe free team battle game, five players a side
Pokemon GOThe free phone game you play by walking around
The card game appsThe digital versions of the Pokemon Trading Card Game

That list is not an accident. Those are the four competitions that crown world champions in San Francisco, so every game with a title on the line gets something in the app for the people watching at home.

What has not been said

We are not going to fill in the blanks here, because Polygon's summary does not.

  • The individual items are not detailed in the report we have.
  • How you claim them is not stated. Some past event rewards needed nothing more than opening the game. Others needed you to watch the official stream while signed in to a linked account.
  • The exact windows are not stated. "During Worlds" and "during one afternoon of Worlds" are very different things if you have a job.
  • Whether every reward reaches every country is not stated. Some do not.

Polygon's piece is the place to read for the specifics, and the games' own social channels are where the claim instructions normally land a day or two before an event starts.

Why companies do this in Worlds week

The World Championships are a spectator event for an audience far larger than the number of people who qualified. Over three thousand players earned a seat. Far more than that will watch.

Free in-game items are how a publisher turns those viewers into players for a weekend. It costs almost nothing to hand out a costume or a bundle of items, and it moves the numbers that matter to them: how many people opened the game, and how many watched the stream to the end.

For you the calculation is simpler. It is free, it takes a few minutes, and the items usually expire.

What to do about it

Open each game you actually play once before the weekend and make sure you can sign in. Password resets are miserable on a Friday night with a stream running.

If a reward turns out to need a linked account, link it early rather than during the finals. And if you see a website promising Worlds rewards in exchange for your login details, close the tab. Real giveaways happen inside the game or through the official stream, never through a form asking for a password.

The tournament itself runs August 28 to 30, with streams starting at 9:00am Pacific / 12:00pm Eastern each day. Our full schedule, including the order the finals are played in, is in the guide below.
